“Hope has two beautiful daughters: their names are anger and courage. Anger that things are the way they are. Courage to make them the way they ought to be.”
- St. Augustine
This quote was first shared with me by a woman deep in the struggle, Debbie Blue, during a weekend experience dealing with race and rightesouness in the church. As we co-led this experience with a fabulous group of people, the two of us had many fun and many hard moments – and she frequently referred to these “two daughters.” It’s a good reminder for me that it is okay to feel anger at how things are, and we need to have courage to keep on keeping on toward the hope of change and real righteousness.
