
Rev. Liz Mosbo VerHage, Ph.D., is a writer, teacher, pastor, wife, mother, student, speaker, consultant, and practicing theologian.
In 2010, Liz completed her Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics at Garrett-Northwestern in Evanston, IL. Her graduate degrees from North Park Theological Seminary are in Theological Studies and Community Development. She is currently an adjunct professor at North Park University in the Biblical and Theological Studies Department and a managing consultant for the Central Conference of the ECC. She was ordained to compassion and justice ministries in the Evangelical Covenant Church in June 2006.
Liz’s professional experience includes doing ministry development and pastoral work at First Covenant Church in Seattle, WA, serving as the Associate Director for Churches Planting Ministries of the ECC, and working as the Faith Outreach Organizer for the Upper Midwest Region of Bread for the World, as part of the ONE Campaign to make poverty history. She has also held various administrative positions for the Denominational Offices of the ECC, Covenant Ministries of Benevolence, the Central Conference Office on Church and Society, CHIC, and Covenant World Relief. She has volunteered with groups such as Lawndale Christian Community Development Association, Jesus People USA, HOME (Homeless on the Move for Equality), and previously served on the board for WellSpring:Center for Hope (a domestic violence agency in Chicago). She is currently serving as chair of the Covenant’s Christian Action Commission and is a member of the Compassion, Mercy and Justice Commission for the Central Conference.
Liz has consulted, preached, written pieces and led various workshops on the issues that she is most passionate about – such as holistic discipleship, the mission of the church, theology of compassion and justice ministries, starting and strengthening non-profits, international development, faith-based advocacy, apartheid and South African churches, racism and the theology of whiteness, leadership and the emerging generation, North American evangelical history, ecclesiology, spiritual formation, motherhood,conflict resolution and Pietism. She’s proud to be a trained co-facilitator of the ECC’s “Invitation to Racial Righteousness” and be trained to co-lead Sankofa journeys for interested groups and churches. She’s been deeply impacted by her travels, including the privilege to teach and tour the Republic of South Africa, speak in Quito, Ecuador, and explore cultures in places including Thailand, Italy, France, Mexico, and various urban/rural/suburban contexts within North America. She’s written three church curriculum series, a book, and has contributed to numerous other publications through articles, liturgy, devotions, blog entries and reflections. Liz is also co-founder of The Young Pietists, a movement for renewing justice in the ECC through emerging leaders, and was co-editor of their bi-annual publication, “The Narthex.”
Liz lives in Chicago, IL, with her husband Peter, an IT professional and personal computer consultant, and their daughter Eva.
