Below is a posting from the US Dept of State website about the international response after Hurricane Katrina. Several countries in the list of those who helped the US stood out to me – Afghanistan and Korea (axis of…), along with Kuwait, Yemen, Jordan and Libya; Israel AND the Palestinian Authority; China AND Taiwan; Thailand and Ethiopia (even though both are suffering from their own internal devastations); and close to my heart, South Africa.
“All Americans are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support from the international community as we help the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama recover and begin to rebuild. Over 130 countries and more than a dozen international organizations have offered assistance to the United States. We are deeply touched by this outpouring of support from the global community.
Countries, international organizations, and foreign parties that have generously stepped forward to make financial pledges or offer personnel, equipment, and disaster relief supplies include:
Afghanistan Albania Andorra Angola Argentina Armenia Australia Austria Azerbaijan The Bahamas Bahrain Bangladesh Barbados Belgium Bolivia Bosnia and Herzegovina Botswana Brazil Brunei Bulgaria Cambodia Cameroon Canada Chile China Colombia Costa Rica Croatia Cuba Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Djibouti Dominica Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Equatorial Guinea Estonia Ethiopia European Commission Finland France Gabon Georgia Germany

True neighborliness, not only shown to us, but also in unexpected solidarity with one another. I like the simple and meaningful way you point this out.
Reminds me and makes me extra upset/mad about our continued farce of an embargo on aid to Haiti…sigh.
