“One Voice”

My coworker Alex sent around a great song yesterday, called “One Voice.” It’s written and performed by a new folk group from Canada, called the Wailin’ Jenny’s, who have recently toured North America and are now being featured on shows like the Prairie Home Companion. The song is simple, sweet, and has great lyrics for those of working on the ONE Campaign. Bread for the World’s 2006 Offering of Letters theme is “One Spirit. One Will. Zero Poverty” and these lyrics also tie into that theme. I especially like how the song grows from one to two to three – it widens and swells and brings more voices into the stream – and then it narrows and comes back down to “one,” but now the idea of one includes all. It’s Ubuntu again – I am because we are.

One Voice (Ruth Moody)

This is the sound of one voice
One spirit, one voice
The sound of one who makes a choice
This is the sound of one voice

This is the sound of voices two
The sound of me singing with you
Helping each other to make it through
This is the sound of voices two

This is the sound of voices three
Singing together in harmony
Surrendering to the mystery
This is the sound of voices three

This is the sound of all of us
Singing with love and the will to trust
Leave the rest behind it will turn to dust
This is the sound of all of us

This is the sound of one voice
One people, one voice
A song for every one of us
This is the sound of one voice
This is the sound of one voice
