Here is a link to a great story from an ECC pastor who is running a non-profit called “Bridges of Hope” that cares for AIDS orphans in the Repoublic of South Africa – a beautiful, ravaged, suffering, and hopeful country that I have had the privilege of visiting twice. My community organizing work with ONE/Bread is also around this issue of how people of faith feel connected (or don’t) to international poverty, disease, and hunger, and what we do about it in our actions. Pastor Wadley talks about how our ideas about faith and the Bible might inform or block how we see a call to be with those suffering with great stories and theology – read and be inspired.

hey liz! i hope you had a fabulous time in san fran. i had no idea bridges of hope was run by an ECC pastor. i spoke at a conference on debt relief in santa barbara this past october. i presented with a woman who spent time in s. africa with bridges of hope – she was awesome. great organization. great aritlce.
i just got back from south africa and had the privilege of spending an afternoon in phillipi with the bridges of hope people. these kids are great, just like any their same age across the world. the little ones want to be spun around and the older ones want to talk about life and school and fun times. i think that the most useful thing that christians can do in response to aids is to try to alleviate the suffering of these orphans. we met a lot of them as we traveled across southern africa, too many. peace.
Matt – I want to hear more about your trip and your time there! I am excited for you and jealous… I love that place.
